Candle Care: Text

Before you burn your candle

Trim the wick to 5mm

The cotton wick of your candle should be trimmed to 5mm prior to each burn.   To cut the wick you should use either a wick trimmer or a sharp pair of scissors.

By trimming the wick you will ensure optimal burning conditions for the candle and increase the burn time an untrimmed wick will burn warmer and faster and can lead to a build up of soot and debris in the melt pool.

Choose the best surface

Always be careful to ensure the candle is on a heat resistance surface and safely out of reach of children and pets.

Choose the best location

The scent from your candle will rise, so choosing a lower surface will allow the scent to throw around the room.  Place your candle away from draughts and open windows, disturbed air will lead to an uneven sooty burn.

Burning your candle

Lighting your candle

With your wick trimmed to 5mm, light your candle with a long handled match, this will minimise any risk of debris gathering in the melt pool.

The first burn

The first time you burn your candle, allow the candle to burn until the wax pool has melted fully, or almost fully, across the container or for a maximum of 4 hours.  This will help to ensure the candle burns evenly for future burns.

Subsequent burns

Burn the candle for a maximum of 4 hours and, before lighting, check that at least 5mm of wax remains in the base of the candle before lighting.

Extinguishing your candle

How to extinguish your candle

Try to use a candle snuffer rather than blowing out your candle.  A candle snuffer starves the flame of oxygen, ensuring that it goes out gently, without giving the wax a chance to spatter. It is the safest way to douse a candle without wax spray.  Blowing out a candle can lead to wax spray and lead to debris and soot gathering in the melt pool.

Reuse or recycle the glass

Our candle glasses are recyclable, but could also be reused in a variety of ways.  We like to reuse them for small posies of flowers!  Please do reuse or recycle them to minimise the environmental impact.  Where you recycle the glasses please do this in accordance with local directions.

Plant your care card

The care card provided with your candle is made from British wildflower seed paper.

It can be planted in compost or soil, perhaps reusing your candle glass as a pot, and allowed to grow to provide food for pollinating insects.
